Safety and Crime Alert

Dear Neighbors,

Over the last seven days there has been a big increase in crime in Jamaica Plain. We need to do some organizing!

Specially, last night there were 5 incidents on and near Boylston Street.

At 6:10 and 6:36 pm on Boylston and Amory and then on Center and Forbes street two our neighbors were robbed. The suspects were described as two slim White Hispanic males in their late teen, one was wearing a red hat and grey hoody and the other had curly hair and freckles.

At 11:15, 11:20, and 11:25, three neighbors were robbed a gunpoint at the intersections Boylton and Chestnut (2), Boylston and Adelaide. The suspects are described as a black female and males in their 20's.

It's imperative to report suspicious activity calling 911 and immediate after something happens to you - even it you get away as criminals will wait for the next person to come along!

To find out what crime has been committed on your street, Please join your neighborhoods groups now and then start organizing to inform your neighbors about what happening and what you can do!

I've spoke with Captain Greland and Sgt. Krause they are going to increase patrols and asked that we:

1) Immediately call 911 to report suspicious and criminal behavior
2) Be aware of our surroundings, do not listen to music while you walk, and walk with or near groups of people.
3) Sit on our porches and keep an eye out for each other.
4) Go for walks together to create a presence in the streets and call 911 if we see suspicious activity.
5) Knock on our neighbors doors, introduce ourselves, and tell them there has been a spike in crime, and invite them to join this network.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Not using your phone on the train and on the way home is a good safety measure to take. Thanks for calling the police. Everyone else please note how important Abigail's story is and how important it is to call 911 immediately after and incident like this. Do not use a phone on the train or on the way home to avoid the situation over all. This is also a great example of how looking someone in the eye is great deterrent as it takes away anonymity

Comment by Abigail Lewis on October 1, 2009 at 10:15pm: My wife and I were approached tonight by three young guys who followed us from Green street station. They had obviously seen my wife with her Iphone on the train and asked her to let him compare it with his, claiming there was some problem he wanted to check. We ended up getting away without getting robbed, mostly I think because we were very nice and looked them in the eye and talked to them but it was VERY sketchy and they had obviously cased us out. I let the JP police department know, but didn't think of it for awhile unfortunately. I plan on not using my phone on the train anymore, especially at night.

The Mayor’s Office is well aware of the recent crime around Stonybook T Station and is happy to see the residents working with the local E 13 police and their neighbors on the Neighbors for Neighbors website and out on our streets!

I live on Boylston, and believe that an active, busy street helps deter crime. Sit on your porches, talk to your neighbors, walk around, read the flyers, hand out the flyers, and continue to work with the police to keep our streets safe.

You don't need "proof" to call 911. You just need to feel suspicious and this sounds suspicious. If it turns out to be nothing, well you did you part! BPD wants us to call, rather than not!

Comment by Angie VM on September 24, 2009 at 5:54pm: I haven't witnessed any robberies recently but I have noticed often at night on Green Street in the area between 30-60 Green St. that there will be cars in parking spots but running and a few times I have seen someone get in the car and get out within a few minutes -- screams of drug deal but since I've had no actual "proof" of this I haven't called 911. Just though I'd give a heads up about that as well...

We recently discovered that my bf's scooter was stolen from right in front of our apt on Chestnut Ave last week. Good to know that at the other end of Chestnut some shady stuff has been going down. Will definitely report if we see anything unusual going on.

Comment by Orissa Viza on September 24, 2009 at 2:47pm: I noticed a small black woman (5'3-4") on the corner of Montebello Rd. and Walnut 2 Saturdays ago walking and yelling in an agitated way. I took note because of my other experiences with people that act strung out. I hurried on because I didn't want to become engaged in what I expected would have been an attempt at a scam. There were 2 hispanic guys nearby with hats on, thought they weren't travelling in a specific group.

Comment by Joseph Porcelli (Founder/Editor) on September 24, 2009 at 9:03am: What ever your concern, or what you are seeing, the way to get the police to address any quality of life or emergency situation is to call 911.

Each call is logged and helps the police decide where they are going to allocate resources. Calls are triage based on resources at that point in time, and trends are noted and addressed. Do not assume someone else has called. Also note, that people have the right to occupy public space. No loitering or trespassing signs need to be posted for police to enforce these rules.

Comment by Michael Patrick Rutter on September 24, 2009 at 8:55am: I think the Stony Brook T-stop is an ideal vantage point for prevention. Yet, it is rarely patrolled and is often a source of unmitigated loitering, especially late at night.
